It could have been anything, but my 1974 Minolta XE-1 was most accessible to me in 1998. My stepfather lent me his 35mm camera at a time in my life when I most needed something creative to do. Several digital and film camera's later, I now shoot with a Nikon D300.
I took my first photography class while living in the Berkshires, MA in the fall of 1998. This was my first look at f-stops, shutter speeds and Polaroid transfers. It was my first formal endeavor to see my environment through the lens of a camera. I recall taking pictures of the local deer poop, pumpkins and trees, lots of trees.
Once I moved to Boston I continued my photographic education by taking a darkroom class at the New England School of Photography. The following year, I began taking classes at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. There I was pushed to examine such questions as "What is beauty?" and "How does one turn the ordinary into the extraordinary?" Both questions were just the beginning of many many more.
I have since moved on to study photography at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Maine Photographic Workshops. Currently, I am enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design where I plan to earn a certificate in digital photography.
I am employed as a secondary math teacher in the Boston Public School system and the Lexington Public School system. I hold a Master's degree in Education and am certified to teach Secondary Math, Middle School Math and Special Education. I am also the facilitator for my high school's Photography club.
